Asking questions during an interview is key in any job search.

You have a job interview, you’re confident and ready to answer any question thrown at you, except you have forgotten about one major part of the interview process, questions for your interviewer. The job search process can be overwhelming, you can be frustrated in the lack of prospective roles or the interviewer can be describing your dream job. It is your responsibility as a candidate to make sure you keep your eye on what is important to you in an employee / employer relationship.

Why did you start looking for a new role in the first place? What management styles have not been positive experiences in the past? What attributes does a successful employee have? The interview process is not always a walk in the park so you want to make sure you have as much information as possible about your future potential employment to make sure you will not be going through the same search process in the near future.

When the time comes be sure to have a few of these questions ready to go when you are asked if you have any questions. Asking questions shows an employer that you are engaged in the process and thinking about a long-term relationship with the company.

Some examples are below.

  • What makes an employee successful in this role?
  • Are there any growth opportunities?
  • What does the training process look like?
  • Why is this position vacant?
  • What type of person works best here?
  • What obstacles does a new employee typically face in the training period?
  • What is your favorite thing about working for the company?
  • What has your career path looked like in this company?
  • What are the next steps in the process?

Happy job hunting!
